Although to be fair, the onus is not so much on the design of the apps themselves, but the general experience of online dating. I’ve had the opportunity and great misfortune to try out more than a couple of the more popular dating apps in the US. I’ve shuffled the order of photos on Tinder, dusted off my reading lists for OKCupid and grappled with the gravity of soul-baring questions such as what’s my favorite Disney movie on Hinge.
Before my initiation into Japanese dating apps, online dating for me was a world full of men showing off abs and baseball caps. It was also a world where phrases like “I like someone who doesn’t take herself too seriously” and Myers-Briggs personality types were commonplace and the words “chill” and “adventure” reigned supreme. But staring at that empty little box can be stressful. How can you sum up who you are in a few words? Which random questions about yourself are you going to answer for the world, and in what tone? A bit of research from relationship-focused dating app Hinge might help you answer those questions. In its own app, Hinge helps people get the conversation started by giving them various prompts to answer, which they can pin to their profile.
So Hinge decided to look at which prompts were most effective, and found that some prompts, and types of responses, are much better than others at getting people dates. Hinge found that people generally like self-deprecation, confessions, and spontaneity. But they don’t like self-promotion, hints for what you’d like to do on a date, and discussions of family dynamics. The results also vary by gender.
Men get a bigger bump for being self-deprecating than women do, while women get a bigger boost for sharing secrets. These are the best and worst responses Hinge found, and how they impact your likelihood of a match.

Hinge The rise of social media has given birth to a new type of star: Many of these influencers have careers outside of social media, but they are famous for being really good at social media, particularly Instagram. These are people with tens or hundreds of thousands of followers checking out their photos, and who brands will often pay money to be associated with.
But part of what makes social-media influencers intriguing is that they let fans into their lives in a casual and intimate way. They aren’t peering down at you from celebrity mountain like a Hollywood movie star. They are more like a friend, or perhaps someone you could even date. But wait, could you? Well, you might at least have a shot — it turns out a lot of influencers are active on dating apps. Dating app Hinge recently debuted the ability to link your Instagram to your profile, something you can also do on competitor Tinder as well.

Hinge put a list together for us of the 30 most eligible influencers, decided by who had a combination of activity on the app and a ton of Instagram followers. Hinge first launched in – a year after Tinder debuted – as a ‘relationship app. In , Hinge re-launched with a new version of the app, which replaced swiping with the ability to like and comment on other users’ pictures, in the hope of sparking conversation. But unlike other swipe apps, where two users have to like each other to interact, Hinge gives users have the freedom to comment or like any other user’s page.
